BUTLER COUNTY

HISTORY

The county was created in 1856 and organized in 1868. There is some controversy over who Butler county was named for: one version says after William Orland Butler, a Kentuckian who declined the appointment of the first territorial governor of Nebraska; the other version states in honor of David Butler, who served as governor from 1867 to 1871. County seat is David City. Population as of 2010 was about 8400.
